Winter Flowers Snowflake

Winter is coming, and I saw many seasonal decorations recently on internet. I decided to make some crochet snowflakes also. I was searching for some appropriate pattern in the pages of some very old crochet magazines. I found one very lovely snowflake shape, but the descriptions were so cryptic and the stitches described didn't give the expected result. So I decided to make my own pattern inspired by the photo from this magazine. I want to share with you these simple instructions in case you would also like to make this snowflake.

Yarn: Any yarn would work, the size of snowflake will depend on the yarn you use.
Hook: Hook appropriate for the yarn you chose.

Stitches and abbrevations (US terms)

ch - chain
sl st - slip stitch
sc - single crochet
dc - double crochet
tr - treble crochet
ttr - triple treble crochet
picot - ch 3, slip stitch in 3th chain from hook

Special stitches

ttr - yarn over 4 times (5 loops on hook), insert the hook into the stitch or chain space, yarn over and pull up a loop (6 loops on hook), *yarn over and pull through 2 loops*, repeat from * 4 more times

2-tr cluster - *yarn over 2 times, insert the hook into the stitch or chain space, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over again and pull through 2 loops* (2 loops remain on hook),  repeat from * once more, (3 loops remain on hook), yarn over and pull through all 3 loops

3-tr cluster - *yarn over 2 times, insert the hook into the stitch or chain space, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over again and pull through 2 loops* (2 loops remain on hook),  repeat from * twice more, (4 loops remain on hook), yarn over and pull through all 4 loops

Starting ring

Start by making a magic ring or ch5 and sl st in 1st ch.

Here is the chart pattern for those of you like me, who are more visual types of crocheters.

I made the white snowflake with cotton 10 thread and hook 1.5 mm and the final dimension of the finished snowflake is around 9 cm (3.5 inches). The blue one is made with Drops Safran cotton and hook 3 mm and its size is around 14 cm (5.5 inches). So depending on the yarn you choose, you can get smaller or bigger snowflakes.

If you want to use them as an ornament for home decoration or Christmas tree, you can use some fabric stiffener or make the one at home using water and sugar. This is what I did with the white snowflake. As you can maybe notice on the photos the stitches are pretty fixed and it's pretty stiff and prefect to be used as an ornament.

  2. I think there's a mistake in the round 1 pattern. I seem to be missing 6 chains at the end of the round.
